Tyler and Aiden are boyfriends living in 1950’s America. They’re gay and proud, but not exactly out. This story about Aiden and Tyler living in an intolerant town during intolerant times is an absolute must read! The story has so much depth. Love, heartache, change, loss, excitement.... it has it all. I love the characters and the challenges they faced and overcame. John Harris is such a talented writer and I look forward to reading more from him!
What can I say, in the beginning of the book, I was disappointed, because it was sad and I didn't want to go down that road. As you might know, this Author has a way of preforming magic and he did! There were lots of excitement, lots of drama, sexy screens and romance! A must read, written by a wonderful Author. Many thanks, 🍯 Honey Bee 🐝📚💙🎶
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Readers Copy of this book. A couple very much in love at a time when they couldn't be public about it. The bias, fear and hate for gays at that time was something they lived with daily. Very emotional story and made me sad that you can't live your life without fear of retaliation. Love the story and the couple. Wonderfully written.
This is a really great Midwestern view of a gay couple trying to get by in the 1950's gay and proud but not out. This very realistic representation of gay life at that time in history will have you going back in time and living with Tyler and Aiden with their trials and tribulations of that era. They are in a long term relationship and are in a rut until one of their friends tells them about "The Black Room". A place that their kind can go and be themselves as long as they know the password to get in. Once they are in The Black Room they find a relaxing and sexually charged place that they can be themselves, dance the night away, and have all of the sex they want with each other, privately or with an audience, or with anyone else. What they decide to do you will have to read but I can tell you that it is an erotic and exciting adventure that will have you wanting more and more.
I always enjoy the messages hidden within John's stories. Aiden and Tyler were at a crossroad in their relationship. Jesse was someone who also passed through their lives. All three men struggled with their sexuality and just wanted to be able to have a loving relationship as any other couple did. This book tugs at your heart when you read the story of Jesse, and the roadblocks and prejudice that Aiden and Tyler faced daily. I liked this book, the courage and strength of the characters just shined through all the negativity around them.

Every once in a while, I’ll read a book that I can seem to really relate to. This book happens to be one of them. Sometimes I see myself in a character or characters, and it scares me to think, ‘That is my life’? When this happens, I want to go back about 10 years and give my former self a good swift kick in the shorts. I want to tell her what to watch for, what to do differently and things I definitely would never have done had I known what would happen in the future. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book.
Aiden and Tyler give us a great glimpse at their lives. Their love life has become stagnant. This comes from a combination of many things; unable to hold hands or touch in public, unable to show their love for each other in public and no kissing in public. What upsets Tyler the most is that he can’t marry Aiden, nor can they have any children. After hearing about a place called “The Black Room”, their love life takes a turn for the better. Until Tyler becomes obsessed with the place as well as one of its patrons.
After Jesse’s lover, Shaw is murdered by his Father, his Father kicks him off the property. Jesse has nowhere to go but a place called “The Black Room”. He learns of the place from Shaw. When the owner finds him on the doorstep, cold hungry and tired, he gives him a room until he can get back on his feet again. Jesse’s been frequenting the establishment ever since.
When Aiden feels like his relationship with Tyler is in jeopardy, he invites Jesse into their bed. After a night of life-altering sex with Jesse, the two lovers discover the love they share is only for each other.
Good story, though Aiden's fears annoyed me a lot. Something like this happened in my life, years ago...different outcome...we became a threesome. We lasted for five years, then all moved on, but are still good friends.
