In the temple, there is no day. No night. There are no people, just me. And a Voice that whispers in the dark. It promises escape, a new life to replace the one I lost when the oracles condemned me to death. But survival comes with a price. Because the creature trapped with me in this labyrinth of stone is not human. And it knows I will do anything to escape my tomb. (47,000 words)

Why I picked it up: A very dear friend of mine has a close relationship with the author and since she knows I love fantasy, she suggested I read it.

Why I finished it: What instantly intrigued me about this book is the imagery. Kannon's fluid descriptions of Ember's world transport the reader to a Middle Eastern setting that is replete with the sinister and the supernatural. I appreciated that Kannon showed the reader enough to ground them in the setting and doesn't beat them over the head with a lengthy narrative regarding the particular brownness of the sand. When the reader first meets Ember, she is in the dark and alone, but as the plot moves along, she emerges from the darkness (both figuratively and literally) to become a self-sufficient young woman. She's a curious, quick witted, and intelligent, which all become key factors in her journey to discover the mysterious creature inhabiting her body and who she is as a person. It's a masterful combination of historical fiction and fantasy that will charm the reader from page one and keep them hooked until the final dramatic conclusion.

Not just another sci-fi fantasy, R. B. Kannon’s Pyre is lyrically written, beautifully evocative, convincingly ancient, and told in the voice of a child, growing to woman, growing to hope. It’s the sort of book that’s easy to pick up and seriously hard to put down, with characters who linger long after the last page is turned.

Lost, hidden or betrayed in a temple, a dying child accepts the help of a Voice which will guide and follow her. But “Which is me, and which is the story?” she wonders as she weaves her answers to those who come to her rescue, and as she strives to become her own person, not just the vessel of another. Can a helpless yes be the answer that makes a curse come true?

Legend, dragon, and Eastern promise; politics faith and fire; fairytale and “the stink of fish and river and mud”; all the classical elements are here, bound together in a story that’s altogether new, told in a voice that’s enthralling, haunted, and ultimately haunting too. It’s hard to imagine, as the tale progresses, how this young teller of tales and discoverer of histories will free or find herself. But the author’s sure touch with myth and storytelling brings the tale full circle in a way that’s truly beautiful and right. I love this book!

Disclosure I met the author and I really love her writing.
Lighter than her last, this is a little less epic but a great yarn - well-crafted, draws you in. Very imaginative.
R.B. Kannon is a master of imagery. Everything from scenic desert oases and marble palaces, to dusty barren wastelands, to airy dreamscapes just jumps off the page. She connects the reader viscerally with every location and scene. The plot, as well, is gripping and interesting. It draws you in. I had trouble putting this book down once I started.
This is a sort of Lovecraftian fantasy novel; not really a style that I normally read, but I enjoyed it.
This book by a young author shows a depth of understanding, a zest for fantasy, and a mature diction. The writing is mature, and unafraid of adjectives when they embellish the story with color. A great read, and I look forward to more from this author.
As a long time friend of the author's father, I have been fortunate to have received an early introduction to R. B. Kannon's first book, Beast from the Sea, which I greatly enjoyed. While the second book, Pyre, is probably inclined towards a younger audience, I still found it to be an entertaining story. As in Beast from the Sea, the author skillfully employs a great deal of imagery and symbolism while, at the same time, maintaining an easy cadence that makes it a pleasure to read. I look forward to Kannon's next work.
An enjoyable read, this book is well written (and, just as importantly, was clearly well edited). The ideas are interesting and the story is entertaining, but ultimately failed to create emotional connections. The plot elements are all there -- action, intrigue, curses & magic, etc -- but they don't come together in a way that really made me care about the characters. I ended up being mostly curious as to the nature of the curse and the entity behind the "Voice".
Ultimately, it was a fun book to read and worth a few dollars, but not one I would read again.
